AI's ease may hinder learning and relationships
IEEE Spectrum·
Researchers are concerned that AI's ability to make tasks too easy could have unintended negative consequences. By removing the 'friction' of effort, struggle, and discomfort, AI may bypass crucial processes for learning, motivation, and meaning. Psychological research suggests that effortful engagement deepens understanding and strengthens memory, often referred to as 'desirable difficulties.' When AI instantly provides polished answers or conversations, it bypasses these developmental processes. This could weaken individuals' ability to develop skills, build relationships, and find meaning in their work, potentially leading to long-term detrimental impacts on critical thinking and social interaction, especially for adolescents.
