Apple, Amazon partner on satellite network deal
The Verge·
Amazon is set to acquire Globalstar's satellite network for $11.57 billion, integrating its spectrum licenses and operations into Amazon's upcoming low-Earth orbit constellation. This strategic move significantly impacts Apple, which held a 20 percent stake in Globalstar. As part of the agreement, Amazon will continue to support and develop satellite services for Apple devices, including the existing Emergency SOS feature for iPhones and Apple Watches. The deal, expected to close in 2027 pending regulatory approval, aims to bolster direct-to-device satellite communication capabilities and challenge existing players like Starlink.
