Australia mandates Big Tech pay for news
TechCrunch·
Australia has introduced draft legislation requiring major tech firms like Meta, Google, and TikTok to pay for news content they aggregate or share. The proposed News Bargaining Incentive (NBI) law imposes a levy on the local revenues of these platforms unless they secure commercial agreements with Australian news publishers. This initiative aims to financially support local journalism, which has been impacted by Big Tech's dominance in news distribution. Unlike previous attempts, the NBI includes TikTok and has no opt-out for platforms, ensuring payment regardless of whether they host news content. AI services are explicitly excluded from this measure.
