Quantum threat to Bitcoin is real, says Nobel physicist
CoinDesk·
Nobel Prize-winning physicist Dr. John Martinis, formerly of Google, warns that quantum computers pose a significant and imminent threat to Bitcoin's security. He highlights that breaking encryption is one of the earliest practical applications for quantum computing, with a sufficiently advanced machine potentially deriving a Bitcoin private key from its public key in minutes. While the development of such powerful quantum computers may still be five to ten years away, Martinis stresses the urgent need for the Bitcoin community to begin planning for quantum-resistant upgrades due to the network's decentralized governance structure, which makes implementing changes slow and complex.
