Solar drone record flight ends in crash
Ars Technica·
A pioneering solar-powered drone, Skydweller, achieved a record-breaking eight-day flight before crashing into the sea. Originally Solar Impulse 2, the aircraft was modified by Skydweller Aero for uncrewed military missions, boasting a 236-foot wingspan covered in solar cells. During its final flight, it participated in US Navy exercises testing AI and drone technologies for maritime patrols, demonstrating capabilities like radar imaging and acting as a communications hub. Despite all systems being nominal, extreme weather conditions depleted its energy reserves, leading to a controlled ditching and subsequent sinking. The drone's flight validated its potential for perpetual uncrewed operations.
