Spyware maker distributes fake Android apps
TechCrunch·
A new report reveals that an Italian company, IPS, has been distributing spyware disguised as legitimate Android applications. This malware, dubbed Morpheus, is designed to steal extensive data from targeted devices by tricking users into installing it through fake app updates. The spyware leverages Android's accessibility features to read screen data and interact with apps, even spoofing WhatsApp to gain biometric authentication for full account access. This tactic, often facilitated by telecom providers, highlights the persistent demand for surveillance technology among law enforcement and intelligence agencies, with IPS being the latest in a series of Italian firms identified as spyware vendors.
